The International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM) welcomed more than 260 attendees to its 2023 biannual congress August 26-30 in Saarbrücken, Germany, reports organizing committee member Claus-Michael Lehr of the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS). In addition to the scientific program, the meeting included 6 workshops, 21 exhibitors, and almost 200 posters.
Lehr noted several highlights of the program, including the keynote address by Peter Gehr of the University of Bern titled “A Journey through the Lungs – a Journey Through the World – an Experience Report of Aerosols in the Lungs” and sessions reflecting his own research interests in infectious diseases, human-based lung models, and “Barriers to Pulmonary Drug Delivery.” Other sessions included, “Recent Trends and Developments in Inhaler Technology,” “Aerosol Exposure and Health,” and “Inhaled Biotherapeutics.” The full program can be viewed here.
According to Lehr, many attendees expressed appreciation for both the program and the atmosphere at Saarland University. The city of Saarbrücken in turn expressed appreciation for the ISAM Congress, with the mayor greeting attendees at a reception held at the town hall and local media reporting on the meeting. He also noted the attendance of well-known German virologist Christian Drosten, who flew in from Berlin in order to meet specialists in aerosol medicine, a topic with which he had little familiarity. “ISAM is the ideal playground for such an interdisciplinary discourse,” Lehr said.
