Most of these themes also played a role in The Pat Burnell New Investigator Award session. The Pat Burnell award goes “to the new researcher who, in the opinion of the DDL Organizing Committee, has not only produced the best research but has shown that they understand and can explain their work, by delivering an excellent presentation.” The finalists who took the podium on the afternoon of December 8 were:

- Martin Jetzer, Novartis Pharma AG, “Investigating the effect of the force control agent magnesium stearate in fluticasone propionate dry powder inhaled formulations with single particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SPAMS)”
- Mats Hertel, Kiel University, “Influence of blender type on the performance of ternary dry powder inhaler formulations”
During the evening reception, the committee announced that it had selected Ahmed Shalash as the winner. Other winners announced were Ayasha Patel of King’s College London for best academic poster for “Drug Loading of Human Albumin Nanocarriers for Inhaled Anti-Tuberculosis Therapy.” Best industrial poster went to Lars Karlsson of AstraZeneca for his poster titled “Performance Indicating Acoustic Emission Measurements on a Dry Powder Inhaler.”
