At the awards ceremony later in the day, committee member Darragh Murnane presented the Pat Burnell New Investigator Award to Sumit Arora. During the award presentations, Jolyon Mitchell was also awarded a lifetime membership to the Aerosol Society in recognition of his contributions to the society, to DDL, and to the OINDP field. The academic poster award went to Joanna Muddle of King’s College London for her poster “Towards an in Vitro Bioassay for Drug Delivery for Orally Inhaled Products,” and the industrial poster award went to Nia Stevens of GlaxoSmithKline for “How Particle Size Changes Lung Deposition: A Physical Modeller’s Perspective.”
In the exhibition hall, over 80 companies showed off their products and services to the delegates, including several first time exhibitors. Anomatic, which manufactures pMDI canisters, became the first Chinese company to exhibit at DDL. Propellant suppliers Camida and Daikin Chemical, which acquired Solvay’s propellant business earlier this year, shared a booth. Glasgow-based scintigraphy specialist BDD Pharma also made its first appearance at the meeting.
Few new products were introduced at the meeting, though Aptar took the opportunity to launch its new DF30Plus metering valve, and Novi Systems officially launched its DecaVertus inhaler testing system, which it had offered as a beta version at RDD Europe 2015.
Several companies were discussing concept devices and processes, including i2c Pharmaceutical Services’ novel pMDI filling system, in which the drug is formulated as a tablet that is easily dispensed into a canister and which is then dissolved or dispersed in the propellant once the can is filled. Coalesce Product Development showed off a prototype Bluetooth-enabled device that allows for inspiratory flow profiling.
Although there was no gala dinner this year, coffee breaks and receptions held in the exhibit hall provided networking opportunities, and several of the exhibitors offered contests and games. As in past years, delegates stopped by the Presspart stand for some virtual golf, and Team Consulting held a contest to guess the number of capsules in a jar, awarding an iPad Mini to winner Anthony Moran of Astech Projects.
Other exhibitors included, Capsugel, Copley Scientific, DFE Pharma, Livermore Instruments, Molins Technologies, and Nemera
