Main purpose of the job
You will take responsibility for, and participate in, the complete development cycle for Medical Product development, from preparing specifications and architecture design through to approval for volume production. The position will require you to apply your mechanical engineering abilities and CAD skills to the development of world-leading medical products for our clients around the globe.
Type of work undertaken by the division/group
The Medical Technology Division of Cambridge Consultants in the US undertakes the development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept, through prototype manufacture, to new product introduction, often incorporating considerable technical challenges.
We undertake development projects in four principal focus areas:
• Surgical products and medical systems
• Drug delivery devices
• Diagnostics products and systems
• Connected health systems
We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and broad industry experience to form powerful development teams. Our work ranges from complete product developments to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.
The division undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.
Specific responsibilities
This position involves taking roles within development projects with exposure to all aspects of development from brainstorming to final delivery. You will be responsible for the generation of concepts and layouts of systems in CAD, detailed design of components and products, tolerance analysis of product designs and preparation of technical reports.
It is anticipated that you will:
• Draw on your experience to deliver creative solutions for medical products , including implantable devices, drug delivery devices, and diagnostic platforms
• Lead tasks from all areas of the product development process, from specification, concept generation, design, prototyping and transfer to manufacture
• Make individual contributions and manage tasks as part of an international multi-disciplinary product development team
• Participate in meetings and presentations with team members and clients, communicating ideas and engineering concepts to all disciplines
• Support the activities of Business Leaders in sales meetings, preparing project proposals and project planning
Minimum requirements
To meet the requirements of this role you should have an excellent undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and greater than 3 years practical experience, with proven technical skills, in an engineering mechanical design environment. Experience in medical device development such as drug delivery devices, diagnostic equipment or electrosurgical tools, is strongly preferred.
You should have excellent team working skills and must be willing to travel up to 20% of the time. You should be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship
Your skill set should include:
• A creative and innovative approach combined with an appreciation of the use of quantitative analysis in development
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and presentation skills
• Strong academic record (Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or related engineering field, Master’s degree is a plus)
• CAD skills required, FEA skills strongly preferred
• Working knowledge and experience of the regulatory environment in the USA and EU is a plus
