According to the Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA), President and Founder Nancy Sander has retired. Sander founded the patient advocacy organization in 1985.
Over the course of her tenure with AANMA, Sander advocated for legal and regulatory changes to benefit asthma patients, including the FDA guidance for dose counters on inhalers. Beginning in 1991, she served as a patient advocate on the coordinating committee for the NHLBI Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. She also spoke at several conferences sponsored by IPAC-RS.
In 2012, Sander was the first non-physician to win the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
Sander commented, “It’s been an incredibly fulfilling and always unexpected journey. I’ve been blessed more than I can ever express and cherish every moment I’ve spent with families, medical care providers, sponsors, members of Congress, federal and state agencies, other advocates, staff and our board of directors because ultimately, working together, we’ve made a world of difference!”
