In addition to scientific sessions, Day 3 of ISAM 2013 included awards presentations and the organization’s general assembly meeting.
During the awards ceremony, Bill Bennett presented the Jurai Ferin award to Patrice Diot of the University Hospital of Tours, France. Along with the certificate of recognition, Diot received the gift of a balloon trip over the Loire valley.
Mark Utell of the Department of Environmental Medicine. University of Rochester was presented with the Thomas Mercer Award, which recognizes “the achievement of excellence in the field of medicinal aerosols and inhalable materials” and is jointly sponsored by the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR). The award includes a plaque and a $5,000 check.
Two awards for younger researchers, the Young Investigator Award and the Student Research Award, went to Andrew Martin of Air Liquide America and Tammy Shen of the University of North Carolina respectively. Martin received a medal and a check for $3,000. Shen received a cash award of $500, a medal, and sponsored registration for the Congress. In addition, her work will be published in the society’s journal, the Journal of Aerosol Medicine. Second and third place student winners Amir Farnoud of the University of Iowa and Elliot Greenblatt of MIT will be reimbursed for their travel expenses.
The winner of the best oral presentation, Christian Ruge of Saarland University, will receive $500.
Approximately 100 members attended the ISAM General Assembly meeting, where outgoing President Bill Bennett cited the success of the ISAM networking groups and LinkedIn group, coordination with other societies, including an ISAM lung imaging standardization workshop at DDL 22, support of the ISAM aerosol school, and a revamped website over the past few years.
After a short discussion, the General Assembly voted unanimously to raise the society’s annual dues to $150 from $120. Dues will now include the electronic version of the Journal of Aerosol Medicine only; print copies will be available for an additional $58. The group also voted unanimously to make changes to its statutes allowing for votes in between the bi-annual congresses.
Results of the society’s elections were announced: Sunalene Devadason will become President Elect; Sabine Häussermann will be General Secretary; Ralph Niven will be Treasurer, and the new board will include David Cipolla, Omar Usmani, Chantal Darquenne, Rajiv Dhand, and Barbara Rothen-Rutishauser. Jim Blanchard is the incoming President.
