The first issue of the Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal is now available online and in print. Volume 1, Issue 1 includes articles on the efficacy of ICS/LABA combination inhalers and on the appropriateness of GOLD COPD categories among others. The issue includes a section called “Country in Focus,” plus spotlights, comment, news, and 2012 research highlights (online only). The print journal will appear monthly.
In an editorial titled, “The juggernaut of respiratory diseases gains momentum,” the editors explain: “Today’s launch of the journal affords an opportunity to illuminate respiratory diseases within the context of the world’s health and sustainability, and we look forward to reading and publishing your research, reviews, and comments that will change thinking and improve patients’ lives. By focusing on quality research, the journal will prompt public debate and disseminate key findings to inform clinical practice. Research papers will be reviewed in a fast-track process to ensure results are reported rapidly to the community. In this way, we hope to play a part in slowing the increase in cases of respiratory disease.”
In a podcast, editor Emily Grainger notes that the journal offers a fast track process that allows publication of research papers online within 8 weeks of submission. The podcast also includes an interview with Claus Vogelmeier, the author of an article in the first issue titled, “Efficacy and safety of once-daily QVA149 compared with twice-daily salmeterol–fluticasone in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (ILLUMINATE): a randomised, double-blind, parallel group study.”
