Paul M. Young and Daniela Traini have moved from the Pharmacy Faculty at the University of Sydney to the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research (WIMR) in order to establish a new Respiratory Technology team at the Institute.
According to Young and Traini, “The WIMR is a world leading respiratory and sleep research organization whose aim is to foster, develop and promote research into the areas of respiratory and sleep medicine. The Institute has over 200 academic researchers based at its purpose built facilities in Sydney and affiliated clinical centers and hospitals. The WIMR is cross-disciplinary and has groups in the areas of cell biology, epidemiology, lung imaging & physiology and clinical management. The Respiratory Technology team will be able to bridge fundamental biological sciences with the clinic and focus on the development and understanding of innovative inhalation medicines for the treatment of lung disease.”
The team’s new formulation, engineering, and characterization laboratory facilities will open officially in January 2013. Projects undertaken by the group include “aerosol particle generation, medical device design, development of new characterization tools, computational methodology and understanding the fate of particles after they deposit in the lung.”
