The non-profit patient education organization Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA) has announced the winners of its 2012 Top Ten Innovations in Technology Awards for “products and services that have meaningfully improved quality of life for people with allergies, asthma and related conditions.” Of the ten winners, seven are OINDPs.
AANMA Founder and President Nancy Sander commented, “When you think about it, most asthma and anaphylaxis medications, from inhalers to auto-injectable epinephrine, are actually a combination of drug plus device – that is, technology. Our organization’s sole mission is to eliminate needless suffering and death due to allergies, asthma and related conditions. We’ve identified 10 innovative technologies that move us closer to this goal when used within the context of the patient’s medical history and treatment plan.”
Inhalation and intranasal devices receiving awards were:
Advair Diskus — GlaxoSmithKline
AeroChamber Plus Flow-Vu — Monaghan Medical Corporation; marketed by Forest Laboratories
Aeroneb Go Micropump Nebulizer — Aerogen Inc.
Qnasl Nasal Spray — Teva
Respimat Soft Mist Inhaler — Boehringer Ingelheim
Ventolin HFA — GlaxoSmithKline
Xolair — Genentech
AANMA will honor the award winners during the 15th annual Allergy & Asthma Day Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on May 10, 2012. Allergy & Asthma Day activities also include an exhibit of antique asthma devices and medications title “Out of the Dark Ages.”
