A number of companies that provide products and services to developers and manufacturers of inhaled and nasal drug products have been named as recipients of the 2011 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise. The Queen presents the awards annually to UK businesses “for outstanding achievement by UK businesses in the categories of Innovation, International Trade and Sustainable Development.” This year’s winners were announced on April 21, as part of the queen’s birthday celebrations.
For the second year in a row, materials characterization company Malvern Instruments has won an award, this year in the “International Trade” category. The recognition marks the company’s seventh Queen’s award altogether. Managing Director Paul Walker credited the company’s employees in addition to its focus on “building and broadening the range of materials characterization products”: “Two Queen’s Awards in two successive years, at a time of considerable economic uncertainty, should see every member of our teams giving themselves a pat on the back.”
Another international trade award went to ICAP, parent company of ICAP Ocean Tomo, which has recently become involved in auctioning intellectual property related to OINDPs. ICAP is an interdealer broker headquartered in London.
In the “Innovation” category, development company Molecular Profiles won for its nanoPASS (nanoscale Predictive Analytical Screening Solution) platform. The company previously won a 2007 Queen’s Award for Continuous Innovation and Development.
CEO Nikin Patel reacted to the news of the award saying, “We are very pleased that our innovative approach has been recognised by the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2011.This great success could not be achieved without the expertise of our team. This accolade recognises their commitment and ability to solve some of the toughest drug development issues.“
Cambridge Consultants, which designs and develops dry powder inhalers among many other products, also won an innovation award, though for a non-OINDP-related product. The company picked up its second Queen’s award for a through-wall radar system. It’s previous award, in 2009, was in the international trade category.
